hmm interesting

this is pretty funky... actually I don't think this is house, more like a funk/video game crossover. I think it's the drum samples that make it that way, but I can see where you're coming from.

It's a really good mix, there snare has a nice pop to it and it seems like you spent a lot of time with the instrumentation. You might want to separate the strero just a bit more on the mid frequncy instruments but still keep it level... A bit more bass and compression wouldn't hurt, it would probably color your really funky bassline better. ;)

Keep it up man!

Hey man, sorry for the late reply, but thanks a lot for the input! I might remaster this with your suggestions in mind. It's one of my favorites, so I'm always tweaking it.

kickass

bass was really grungy and thick :] wished it was longer. nice fx though

i love you.

LOOK AT THIS SPOR.

GREAT

wow, this blew me away :)

I love the rhodes, and the lyrics are amazing. Very pro, I'd love a chance to remix this. :)

JMaC5000 responds:

Thanks man, I produced the whole thing myself. It's going on my new album "The Prodigal Son" which should be finished in the next month or so. When I finish, I could send you the masters to remix if you'd like. Peace.

I love it

very laid back and relaxing. The breaks were sweet. The only thing that threw me off was the 16th note square thing.. Other than that it was great...

interesting

The vocals at the beginning were pretty creepy.

The beat is nice, but I don't think it's full enough. Maybe some more hi hats or something to fill up the space would be nice.. It could give some more adrenaline to this track even though it is pretty intense.

ahh, here you go. Nice fills and stuff. It seems like a lot of attention was payed to panning as well. Just try to beef up that bassdrum a bit more.

I love those synths you used... If I'm not mistaken, did you use a HP over that lead with a lot of resonance? It's very memorable; pretty original too.

I really like your tracks, but I think you could benefit from a bit more bass. When you distort everything, you tend to lose some important low frequencies. Try to leave the very low ones untouched, or send the instrument to two effect channels, one being distorted and the other one not. Some subbass could do well too.

Nice job man, it's great to see you submitting again. ;) Drop me a line sometime.

Helix6 responds:

Nice to have a very reputable Portal artist review my stuff. I agree on the low end issue; as mentioned elsewhere, my "old" (a.k.a. good) mastering preset was lost with my system migration. Really I need to find a better system (or samples) for composing my rhythm samples. My next music investment (among many other investments) is probably going to be digital drums. I want to get a good set that really sound "tight" and acoustic. Digital music really tends to lose "voice" in the area of beat. It is a challenge to create the "accidentals" that you achieve on acoustic drums. Thanks for the review. Maybe we should col-lab sometime.

cool

Looks like you got the upload error again. :(

For the most part I really liked the song, but the hi hats have too much highs and they really stand out. Personally I'd boost some of the high mids; it gives more of a rolling shakey feel rather than the clicky stuff you've got here.

I love that part where the compression makes almost a tremelo. :P I don't know if that was intended or not, but it sounded awesome. The whole compression thing might not work for the entire song. You could probably put a limiter on the master track and just boost the compression on that cool part. :D Actually your effect sounded more like sidechaining than anything.

The drum work was really good, your fills were smooth and interesting. Try boosting around 100hz on your kick... It'll be a bit punchier that way. Also try to keep the reverb down on things that are generally low mids and down. This way your mix will be a bit less muddy.

Again, your bass could use a bit of modultation. It's gritty and you've got some cool rhythms going on, but it gets bland after awhile. Some sub bass would be nice too, all you gotta do is play a sine wave really low along with the bass.

I think this could be awesome if you cleaned up a few things. :)

Keep it up man...

PERVOK responds:

It's nice to know that SOMEONE hasn't given up hope that I won't make something good in the future. Thanks for the review.

I like my hi hats high, but I never tried EQing them more mid-like; I'll give that a whirl and see how it sounds.

And I think you might have enjoyed the original drum fill at that compression-tremelo part. The original fill was the bass drum playing at 16th notes, or "double pedal style". I changed it to 8th notes though because with the 16th note roll, it made the track warble like a bitch :P I changed it cause I didn't think anyone else would like it though.

I was thinking about adding another reese synth at the end entirely, but alas; I got lazy.

I'll take the time to try and make something really good in Reason. Just for you Ian :)

Thanks yet again for the review. Keep it easy bro.

:D

I like that synth at the beginning.. cheesy, but whatever. :P I'd spread it out a bit more stereo-wise.

The drums are really powerful, but they lack the punchy snare. You can go different ways in dnb, but I think this track would be best with some more definition to the snares.

The break near the end with the pads and pianos was cool... Try to keep the levels down, cause there's some crunchyness in between the big booms and bassdrums.

You did a nice job; just make sure everything flows correctly. ;)

I'll keep that in mind. THis was my first project in four months =p... gotta be a little rusty in the works. Thanks for the review bro^^

woo

That was pretty cool. You really can create some abstract sounds. For awhile I thought those second drums were guitars. :O

The 'stepping stoned' percussion was really cool and it reminded me of tap dancing. :P

Great job man.
5/5

Thanks.
I'm glad my Foley/tap/stepping experiment is appreciated! :D
