wow

This is pretty sweet man. I like the drums, but they sound really light. The snare needs a bit more punch to it, and there needs to be less compression. A little more growl to the bass could give some more power to this track. It's really good though, I love that orchestral sample.

great job you two. Wish you best of luck in the contest. ;)

Winterwind-NS responds:

I just finished making adjustments
i agree, in this version, thers too much compression
Rocky and i took care of all that tho now.
I dont think im allowd to resubmit tho :/

thanks for the review

I like this one. I just got an ipod, so I'm putting all your stuff on it. :P

I like the intro with the flute and the slow strings... The guitar sounds a bit off as in realism, but it's not too much of a problem. It sounds really fake during the stumming in the middle, though.

If you ever need it, I'll be willing to record some acoustic guitar parts for you.

The orchestral elements, as always, were very calming and crisp. There's an adventurous tone to the song that I really like when you get to the deeper staccato strings.

Not much else to say, nice job! I just released new song you might like, do you think you could give it a listen? :o

MaestroRage responds:

of course! I'll drop by right away!

The guitar strumming does lose it's realism doesn't it? See I don't know how to play the guitar, and so I do often lose the realism. It's not unknown that guitar players would laugh at me.

"You can't play that! J00 SUX!". After having my face stuck in ":(" mode a couple hours, I get back at it anyways.

If you could give me any tips concerning the guitar I am all ears.

Thank you for the review cornand! I'm glad you liked it!

hmm

Well it's not perfect, but you've got some good ideas.

First thing I would change is that kick... it sounds really clicky and too full of resonance. Try using a punchier sample, or try to compress it and sidechain it a bit. It's too blunt to be honest, and a little bit of that could fill up the space.

The synths kinda sounded like presets.. There's nothing wrong if they sound good where they are, but they don't sound fitting. They're too filtered and phasey. You need something that will stand out, something closer to a saw wave. You can do that easily with 3xosc. (I'm assuming you're using FL studio) Throw a bit of reverb and chorus on it, maybe compress it to add some sustain. It'll give it more of an anthem-type sound, which would be fitting for something like LOTR.

The bass is ok, but it sounds too poppy and cheesy. If you want a really thick bass, use 3xosc again and play around with sqaures and saws (be sure to turn all the coarse pitch knobs to zero) and the cutoff envelope with some resonance.

Back to the drums. Your samples aren't that great, but it's hard to find good ones. Look in the Vintage pack (it's already in fl studio) for the open hi-hat 2 and a clap. There's some nice closed hi hats there, too. Try adding some reverb to your claps. You get a more defined groove, plus it adds a lot of space to your tracks. ;)

One more thing, and that's the plucked instrument you're using. It sounds really bland and clicky, maybe a piano would work better. You could always compress it too, maybe add some reverb as well. That's become a habit for me, at least. :P

Hope I don't sound like a snob... I'm just trying to help.

You don't sound like a snob; this is exactly what I was hoping to hear.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about 3xosc, "throwing reverb/chorus" on things, or compressing stuff. Your only option is to email me (endlessnumber@yahoo.com) or let me wallow in my nubbishness. Take your pick.

I like that beat at the beginning... It's really catchy. :P Personally, I'd like to hear a bit more punch to the drums... you could probably do that by layering a really powerful kick and a snare around the fat amen break.

Try to keep away from overusing the pads and such, you need to have parts where the focus is more on the drums and the bass rather than the ambient stuff. It's good and all, just be sure to use it in moderation. Same thing goes for that guitar.

Try to fill your drums out a bit more; ghost snares and hi-hats/shakers/tambourines go well.

Overall good job, you've got some cool ideas.

TheComet responds:

can't remember what ghost percussions sound like right now, could you pm me a little refresher?

nice : )

The beginning synths were pretty interesting, to say the least. :P

You've got a lot of nice low frequencies in there. I'd try keep from overusing that trance synth in the whole song, it could get annoying and crowded...

There's also some problems with clipping; just a few, so nothing that ruins the song. Just watch each channels individual volume.

The one thing I notice in every one of your songs is the large amount of variety. That can be really good most times, but don't make it so that you can't sustain a decent groove for a bit.

Another thing that kinda bugs me is the lack of bass... I don't doubt that there's some lower instrument in there, but I can't really get into it. Trance usually has an offbeat or rhythmic variation of that pattern.

I really did like that stuttering synth though, it gave a glitchy yet ambient feel... I'm assuming you used a bit of reverb on it? :) At the end you used this arp... it could work really well as an outro, but make sure it's in the same scale.

You've got a lot of great ideas, but you just need to work on getting everything smoothed out and organized.

Hope that wasn't too critical... :P Oh, and kudos to EchozAurora. :)

Nice job, keep it up man.

HouseMasta responds:

there is a bass, but its the techno sounding instrument that goes from left ear to right ear, panning back and forth. i shouldve just made it a diff instrument. ah well. too late now

pretty good :)

That's a pretty cool intro there. Nice portamento or whatever. :P

The sub bass was strong, but try complementing it with a scratchier reese. Your drums are really energetic, but I'd suggest using a punchier snare. If you boost some of the low-mid and high frequencies, I think you'll like what you get.

The swing on the beat was awesome, though. :)

Keep it up.

Paroxym responds:

Thanx for the comments man. peace!

hmmm nice :)

I really like those reversed vocal sounding pads at the beginning. The vox were nice too... The wave shaping/distortion on them was interesting, in a good way that is. You use reversed samples really well, I've gotta it to you. This sounds like it took a long time to make. I could really get lost in this...

I checked out your stuff at beatport; I might buy the CD though.

Kudos on the awesome track. ;)
~cornandbeans

Kingbastard responds:

no pads, just vox. didnt take that long to make actually, was one of my quicker tracks:D YOu should buy the Cd, it's fecking great:D

ooo! :D

I really like that harp at the beginning. The subtle fade in of the french horns was really cool. :D

Ahh.. That's a really cool violin lead. I might be getting this out of nowhere, but I think a sitar playing a few notes along with the melody (softly) would sound really cool. The whole song sounds really asian to me for some odd reason... :P Like something you would hear in crouching tiger, you know?

But again, I loved those delayed harps. Really relaxing piece, man. I've gotta 5 it. ;)

Keep up the awesome work!
~cornandbeans

languid-phenomenon responds:

Man, i wish i had i good sounding sitar sample...if i had one of those, you bet I'd be using it XD

Asian huh? I can kind of see where you're coming from with that, but i dont think this would quite make it into crouching tiger XD Im not that good yet lol.

Thanks for the review and the vote!
Always glad to know theres another satisfied listener!

LP

mmmmm :)

I'm really stressed right now, I've got two papers to type and two tests to study for.... and it's 1:30... So yea, this really helped me calm down a bit.

I probably should be working though, sorry for a short review. I can never be disappointed whenever you've got a new track out. :)

Peace
